In the movie, "Life is Beautiful," was it appropriate for humor to be in a movie about the Holocaust?

Please offer deep insight. All i have right now is it was appropriate because it want't making fun of the Holocaust, but it was the only way Guido could protect his young son in such a hostile environment.
